This list will help your trip start off on a more relaxed note by reassuring you that you have done everything necessary to leave your home secure.

Just remember to print out this TO DO list and post it in a visible spot. There is nothing worse than wondering for a week whether or not you actually turned off the oven!
To Dos Before One Leaves on a Trip

Several weeks before

  1. Print out this list and tape up in obvious place to see
  2. Determine care of pets


Several days before

  1. Ask neighbor to get mail/papers and to bring out garbage can
  2. Or stop delivery of mail/papers
  3. Leave cell phone number and/or destination with contact information


Day before

  1. Clean out refrigerator
  2. Run dishwasher one last time
  3. Empty garbage cans
  4. Empty washer and dryer
  5. Hide jewelry/other valuables
  6. Set up 2 lights on timers
  7. Charge cellphone, ipod, and cameras
  8. Remember to pack chargers and headphones
  9. Remember to pack books and/or books on tape
  10. Remember to pack playing cards and/or board games
  11. Remember to have directions to destination and phone number of destination
  12. Remember to pack travel diary for note-taking
  13. Lock up financial information/checks
  14. Leave important information with friend/relative:
  • Location of pets
  • Name of lawyer (who has important financial information)
  • Extra key
Day of trip
  1. Un-plug computer
  2. Un-plug televisions
  3. Un-plug blow dryer/curling irons
  4. Check oven/stove/iron
  5. Turn down heat/turn up A/C
  6. Check all doors and windows
  7. Set burglar alarm
